Men walking along railroad tracks give this negative its subject, and the Bain News Service caption calls them tramps. That label comes from unverified data on the negative or caption card, so the scene may be posed rather than candid. George Grantham Bain's agency supplied newspapers with photographs of current events and everyday city and country life, and in the early twentieth century, many unemployed men rode freight trains and walked rail lines between jobs, which made tracks a common setting for such travelers. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the picture is uncertain.
