Few holiday cards pair a Christian feast with a fairy-tale cast quite like this one, whose German greeting, *Fröhliche Pfingsten*, wishes its reader a happy Pentecost. Pentecost falls seven weeks after Easter and marks the day the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, so it is a major feast in German-speaking churches. Postcards of the late 1800s and early 1900s often paired seasonal wishes with playful scenes of children, flowers and small creatures, and the insect musicians here give the sacred occasion a cheerful, folkloric turn. The card shows how popular illustration could soften religious observance into something warm and domestic.
