Belleville in 1867 was the county seat of St. Clair County, Illinois, a prairie town east of St. Louis whose population had grown with German immigrants since the 1830s. The Ohio and Mississippi Railroad reached the area in the 1850s, tying local farms and limestone quarries to larger markets. The town had already drawn national attention in 1858, when Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held one of their senatorial debates there. By the late 1860s, civic and social life centered on the courthouse square, German singing societies, and gymnastic clubs, and many residents would have known Belleville as a prosperous county seat where German was heard on many streets.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Belleville, Illinois, drawn in 1867. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
