A carved pumpkin lit from within is the entire subject of this 1950 woodcut, rendered in bold black-and-white blocks that give the grinning face and the jagged cuts a stark, almost graphic punch. Printmakers of the mid-twentieth century often turned to woodcut for seasonal and folk subjects, valuing its direct, hand-cut texture over fine detail. The jack-o'-lantern itself has deep roots: the carved-turnip lanterns of Ireland and Scotland, lit to ward off wandering spirits, were carried into America by immigrants, who found pumpkins far easier to carve. The print preserves that long tradition in a single, simplified image.
