Read as a pun, the title "New Year's Desert" points to a dessert rather than a landscape, and the board it hangs on, Apples, suggests the sweet course is apple-based. Apple desserts have long been a fixture of American winter holiday tables, when the fall harvest was still stored and eaten, and pies, crisps, and cobblers often marked the turn of the year. The photo was shared on Flickr under a Creative Commons license by a user credited as Carly & Art, so the record offers little more about the scene itself. Looking closely at the plating and setting will show how a simple baked dish was dressed up for a celebration.
