Here the sitter is the stage comedian William H. Crane, and the title, *The Head of the Family*, points to a household rather than a dramatic scene. Crane (1845–1928) had a long career in American theater, built on warm, understated comic roles that made him one of the better-known performers of his era. Theatrical portraits like this one were widely circulated, so they show how actors were presented to audiences who followed them from city to city. The title itself is worth noticing, since it frames the subject through a family story rather than through a particular character or moment on stage.
