Cornstalks twisted into bunches and a scatter of pumpkins fill this c. 1900 platinum print by Emma Justine Farnsworth, a field scene that records a harvest practice now largely gone. Before mechanical harvesters, farmers bound stalks by hand so the grain could dry in the field before husking. Platinum printing, valued for its soft tonal range and matte surface, was a favored process among amateur and art photographers around 1900, so the rural subject reflects both a working landscape and a deliberate choice of composition. Its autumn imagery also explains its place among the board's Halloween pictures, since harvest motifs became closely tied to late-October celebrations.
