Norwich, Connecticut, in 1912 was an industrial city of mills, machine shops, and rail lines packed into the narrow valleys where the Shetucket and Yantic rivers meet. Its downtown streets climbed steep hills above the water, and the hospital for the mentally ill that opened on the city's outskirts in 1904 gave it a regional role beyond manufacturing. Electric trolleys had by then replaced horse cars on many streets, carrying mill hands and shoppers between neighborhoods and out to the villages along the river. Local readers followed the city's affairs in the *Norwich Bulletin*, a daily that had been printing since the early 1800s. The map shows a town at its fullest development before the automobile and the later decline of New England textiles reshaped its streets.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Norwich, Connecticut, drawn in 1912. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
