In 1868 Saint Johns was the county seat of Clinton County, in the central part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, and its fortunes rested largely on the farms around it. Wheat, corn, and livestock from cleared land moved through local markets, while lumber from nearby forests still supplied the sawmills that had driven early settlement in the region. The Civil War had ended only three years earlier, and veterans and their families were a visible part of town life, in county courthouse business, churches, and lodges alike. Residents would have known Saint Johns as a modest agricultural seat still filling in its streets, schools, and shops, and the courthouse square was the center of its public life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Saint Johns, Michigan, drawn in 1868. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
