This portrait shows Thomas Alva Edison around 1878, when he was about 31 and working at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. The photoprint was copyrighted by L.C. Handy, and the catalog notes that the date and identification come from an unverified caption card. The period was a busy one for Edison: in late 1877 he had announced the tinfoil phonograph, and he was turning to electric lighting, the work that would lead to his practical incandescent lamp.
