Olive Thomas, the subject named in this glass negative's record, was a Ziegfeld Follies performer who became a popular silent film actress in the 1910s. Her career was brief, and she died in Paris in 1920 at age 25. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold news pictures to newspapers, made many portraits of stage and screen figures like her. The record gives no date, but the glass negative format and the agency's origin place the picture in the early twentieth century.
