Easter, the spring festival that marks the resurrection of Jesus in Christian belief, has been observed for centuries and is among the most widely celebrated holidays in the world. Its date moves each year because it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, a rule set by early church councils. Over time the holiday gathered customs that are not strictly religious, including eggs, flowers, new clothing and family gatherings, many of which reflect the season's theme of renewal. Images of Easter often show these traditions as much as the religious story behind them.
