Small winged figures pass in front of a full moon here, their dark shapes set against its pale disk above rolling hills. Fairy scenes like this were popular in nineteenth-century illustration, drawing on older folklore about beings that dance in moonlight and move between the human and natural worlds. The grouping with angels rests on the wings, since both kinds of beings are shown airborne, though their origins in belief differ sharply. Note how the tiny figures are dwarfed by the moon and landscape, a choice that gives the scene its quiet sense of distance.
