Trees frame the White House in this view, with its pale facade seen across an open lawn in Washington, D.C. Irish-born architect James Hoban's design won a competition in 1792, and the building was largely finished by 1800, when John Adams became the first president to live there. Scenes like this, with the house glimpsed through foliage, show the residence as a quiet, lived-in place as well as a national symbol.
