Weston, the seat of Lewis County in north-central West Virginia, sat on the banks of the West Fork River in 1900, and its streets and houses were shaped as much by the state's institutions as by commerce. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, a large state hospital on the town's edge, drew staff, patients, and supply trade, and it was among the town's most important employers. Farming families brought goods to the county seat, and the courthouse square was the center of local politics and legal business. Life in the town also revolved around churches, schools, and rail and river connections to the surrounding hill country, where timber and coal were moving to market. Residents of 1900 would have known Weston first as the home of that great asylum and as the county's governing center.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Weston, West Virginia, drawn in 1900. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
