This engraved label advertises Roberts' Horse Powders, a patent remedy sold to owners who wanted a quick fix for ailing animals. Around 1854, makers of such preparations commonly paired bold lettering with an engraved picture of a horse, and the label was meant to catch the eye of a buyer at a general store or a peddler's cart. Patent medicines for livestock were largely unregulated then, so their claims rested on the seller's word rather than tested evidence. Labels like this one now record how much trust, and how much hope, people placed in a bottle or packet of powder.
