A joyous Easter greeting card built around a violin-playing cherub is a charming example of how Easter imagery drifted from strictly religious scenes toward sentimental, decorative motifs in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Cards of this kind were often printed in large runs, with chromolithographed colors and small embellishments that made them affordable gifts for family and friends. The cherub, a winged child with a musical instrument, borrowed from older European art and signaled celebration and good cheer rather than the solemnity of the Passion. Looking closely, you can see how the designers balanced sweetness with the spring themes of renewal that Easter greetings carried.
