A small engraved label for Mrs. G. Linnaeus Banks, the novelist who published under that name, carries the title of her 1876 novel, *The Manchester Man*, which links this bookplate to her own writing. Victorian book owners pasted such labels inside their covers to mark ownership, and many chose designs that reflected their interests or a favorite book. The novel itself follows a Manchester man through the city's commercial and industrial life, a setting that drew much attention in the mid-nineteenth century as the city grew into a center of cotton manufacturing. Seen together, the plate and the title show an author claiming her books in the same way a reader would.
