New Brighton, Pennsylvania, in 1883 was a river town in Beaver County, set on the Beaver River and tied to the Pittsburgh district's iron, steel, and glass industries. Its mills, foundries, and brickworks drew workers from nearby farms and from immigrant families, and the town's streets grew up around the factory whistles and river traffic. Rail and river links connected local manufacturers to Pittsburgh's markets and carried raw materials in and finished goods out. Residents would have known the town as a working community of churches, schools, and busy commercial streets, and this view records those buildings at a time when the valley was expanding quickly.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of New Brighton, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
