Beaver, the seat of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, sits where the Beaver River meets the Ohio roughly thirty miles northwest of Pittsburgh. In 1900 the town's economy rested on the river and the industrial valley around it, with steamboats and barges carrying coal and manufactured goods along the Ohio while mills and factories lined the banks of the rivers nearby. The county courthouse and its offices gave the town its legal and political life, and churches, schools and shops made up its daily round. Residents would have known Beaver as a compact river town living in the shadow of Pittsburgh, whose steel and glass works were spreading through the valley. The map captures the community just before the region's industrial boom reshaped the towns around it.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Beaver, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1900. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
