Few wartime posters were as direct as this one, which tells the viewer plainly that buying a Liberty Bond is the thing to do. The United States Treasury issued the bonds to pay for the country's part in the First World War after Congress declared war in April 1917. The government ran several Liberty Loan drives, and each one leaned heavily on posters, parades and public appeals to turn ordinary families into lenders. Notice that the poster asks the viewer to act rather than simply admire the image.
