A white unicorn standing beside a woman in a moonlit forest sets this scene apart from the board's more typical angels and fairies. The pairing draws on a long tradition in which the unicorn, a symbol of purity, could be tamed only by a maiden, an image later read as a reference to the Virgin Mary. Medieval tapestries such as the Lady and the Unicorn series in Paris made the motif famous, and artists in later centuries returned to it with a more dreamlike, nocturnal mood. The silver light of the moon turns the forest into a space that feels both sacred and faintly otherworldly.
