Georges Carpentier was a French boxer who held the light heavyweight world title in the early 1920s and became one of the best-known athletes in Europe and America of his day. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of pictures made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with images of current events, celebrities and sports from the early 1900s onward. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is unclear. Still, the Bain archive is valued for capturing the faces and public life of the period, and a portrait of a figure like Carpentier offers a useful window into how sports stars were pictured for the press.
