The only identifying detail this negative carries is the name Mackenzie, taken from unverified notes the Bain News Service wrote on the glass or its caption cards, so the subject itself remains uncertain. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency in 1899, and its staff supplied news pictures to newspapers and magazines in the first decades of the twentieth century. Small glass plates like this one were the standard working medium of that era, prized for their sharp detail and their ability to yield many prints. Together those qualities make the negative a useful window into how press photographs were made and stored.
