Titled simply "Christmas," this picture presents the holiday as a general scene rather than a named event or place, so its meaning rests on the familiar imagery of the season. American holiday pictures of the late 1800s and early 1900s drew on a shared vocabulary of evergreens, family gatherings, and snowy streets, much of it shaped by Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" and by Thomas Nast's later drawings of Santa Claus. Looking closely at such scenes shows how Americans of that period pictured domestic warmth and generosity as the heart of Christmas.
