Red, yellow and green apples heaped together make up this picture, with the three colors stacked in loose, overlapping rows that show off the range of varieties grown for market. Fruit labels like this one were printed in large numbers during the late 1800s and early 1900s, when crate labels were a major form of commercial art and orchards shipped apples by rail to eastern cities. Pictures of apples sorted by color were often chosen to suggest abundance and freshness to buyers. Look closely at the highlights and shadows on each fruit, which the printers built up with separate color stones or plates.
