Mannington, in Marion County in north-central West Virginia, was in 1897 a town whose fortunes rested on coal, timber, and the railroads that carried them out. Rail lines running through the county moved coal from its hills to markets in the Ohio Valley and beyond, and the mines drew working families to the area. West Virginia had been a state only since 1863, so towns like Mannington were still young, and the streets, churches, and business blocks of 1897 reflected a community growing alongside its extractive economy. Residents would have known the place for its coalfield work and its rail connections.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Mannington, West Virginia, drawn in 1897. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
