Two children cradle a pair of yellow chicks in the foreground of this Easter postcard, a sentimental scene that was once one of the most common greetings sent around the spring holiday. Cards like this were typically printed in large runs by lithographers in Europe and America from the late nineteenth into the early twentieth century, when inexpensive color printing made the postal greeting a popular way to mark holidays. Look closely at the soft pastel palette and the decorative border, which reflect the fashion for sweet, idealized childhood imagery of the period.
