The team photographed here is Harvard University's 1904 nine, a group portrait that the Library of Congress dates to 1905. It appeared on page 190 of *Spalding's Official Base Ball Guide*, the annual reference that the American Sports Publishing Company issued in New York and that gave readers team rosters and season summaries. Collegiate baseball was a prominent sport in the early 1900s, and the guide's inclusion of a Harvard team shows how seriously its programs were followed. The halftone process used to reproduce the photograph was then the standard way to print images in mass-circulation publications.
