Chestertown, the county seat of Kent County on Maryland's Eastern Shore, sat on the Chester River in 1907 as a town whose economy still ran largely on water and farmland. Grain, produce, and timber moved out by boat and wagon, continuing a river trade that had built the town's colonial-era prosperity. Washington College, chartered in 1782, anchored its civic and cultural life, and students and professors were a familiar presence on its streets. Residents knew Chestertown as a brick-and-shade river town where courthouse business, church suppers, and the comings and goings of river boats shaped the week. The street plan shown in the 1907 drawing had changed little for generations.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Chestertown, Maryland, drawn in 1907. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
