A couple sits in a vintage open automobile whose body is covered in flowers, a detail that sets this picture apart from the many Valentine's Day images on the Cupid board. Flower-decorated cars were a familiar sight at early twentieth-century parades, weddings and holiday outings, when open touring cars were still a novelty and owners showed them off with garlands and blossoms. Pairing the car with a romantic holiday gives the scene a playful, staged quality, as the decorations were meant to turn an ordinary ride into a celebration.
