Angels, a cross and an unrolled scroll make up the design of this Easter postcard, which sets it apart from the many Easter cards on the same board that lean on lilies, eggs or rabbits. Cards of this kind were widely mailed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when illustrated postcards became a cheap and popular way to send holiday greetings. The religious imagery reflects how closely the holiday was tied to the Resurrection story, with the cross recalling the crucifixion and the angels recalling the empty tomb. Worth noticing is the scroll, a device that often carried a short greeting or verse in these cards, letting the sender speak directly through the printed design.
