Titled *The country doctor*, this color lithograph from about 1883 promotes Ayer's Cathartic Pills, a laxative made by J.C. Ayer & Co. of Lowell, Massachusetts, a firm known for heavy advertising in the late nineteenth century. Trade cards like this were handed out to customers and tucked into homes and shops, so they reached a wide public with scenes meant to make a remedy familiar. The catalog also lists African Americans and health and welfare as subjects, which points to how patent medicine advertising sought many audiences, even though its health claims were rarely backed by evidence.
