Chicago in 1893 was hosting the World's Columbian Exposition, a fair built on the lakefront in Jackson Park and the Midway Plaisance to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's landing in the Americas. The city had rebuilt after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and had grown into one of the country's largest rail and meatpacking centers, with its stockyards and grain elevators shipping goods across the Midwest. Designers led by Daniel Burnham and the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted created a "White City" of neoclassical palaces around a long reflecting basin, drawing millions of visitors over the summer and fall. The fair also showcased the electric lighting and new machinery of the age, and its opening was soon overshadowed by the financial Panic of 1893 that gripped the nation.
