A fairy perched on an armadillo is an unusual pairing, since the armored animal is native to the Americas and has little place in European fairy lore, where spirits more often ride moths, hares, or birds. Here the winged figure sits calmly in an open meadow, a setting that ties the scene to the long tradition of fairies as spirits of the countryside. Fairy paintings and illustrations flourished in Britain and America from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, when artists liked to blend natural history with whimsy. Notice how the animal's bony plates contrast with the delicate, gauzy wings.
