Nebraska City, the seat of Otoe County on the west bank of the Missouri River, was in 1868 about a year into Nebraska's statehood, which had begun on March 1, 1867. The town had grown up as a river landing and outfitting point, where steamboats unloaded goods and freight wagons took supplies overland toward Colorado, Montana, and the Platte Valley. Its merchants, boatmen, and teamsters shaped daily life, and the town's politics centered on county business and the question of how far rail lines would reach from the river. Residents who looked at a view like this would have recognized their own streets, church spires, and warehouses along the levee, as a place still defined by its position on the water.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Nebraska City, Nebraska, drawn in 1868. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
