The title takes its wording from a rallying cry, "three cheers for the red, white and blue," that was shouted at parades, Fourth of July gatherings, and send-offs for troops throughout the 19th century. The phrase points to the flag's colors, which the Second Continental Congress left unexplained when it adopted the design in 1777. Charles Thomson, the congressional secretary, later gave an official meaning: white for purity and innocence, red for valor, and blue for vigilance, perseverance and justice. The record does not say more about this particular picture, but its subject reflects how Americans expressed national pride in those years.
