Its title is simple, and the picture takes Christmas itself as its subject. By the nineteenth century the holiday had become one of the most visible celebrations in American and European life, with its customs of decorated evergreens, gift-giving, and family gatherings spread widely through magazines, illustrated papers, and shop windows. Images of the season drew on these familiar scenes, and over time the holiday settled into a set of recognizable signs, such as trees, stockings, and wreaths, that viewers could read at a glance.
