Violet Brand is a crate label, so the picture was made to sell apples, not to record a scene. Its violet blossoms are the detail that sets it apart from the many apple labels in this group, which often show orchards, fruit closeups or farm names. Crate labels like this were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when growers in districts such as the Pacific Northwest and the Hudson Valley competed for buyers in distant cities. Bright color lithography made a brand recognizable across a crowded fruit stand, and many of these labels are now collected for their design as much as for the orchards they advertised.
