Two boys dancing across the lower half of this trade card set it apart from many calendar cards of its kind, and the July page ties it to Independence Day. Merchants of the late 1800s printed colorful cards like this to advertise their businesses, and a monthly calendar gave customers a reason to keep the card on a wall or in a drawer through the season. Cards with children at play were especially popular, and the Fourth of July setting suggests the card was meant to be used for summer holiday celebrations.
