The sitter is recorded only as Bessie McKenna, a name taken from caption cards and negative sleeves that the Bain News Service attached to its pictures, and the library has not verified it. The glass negative is one of the many thousands that the New York agency, founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899, produced for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Because the agency sold pictures to clients who needed them quickly, its files often lack full dates and identifications, so the name and the image are best read as a starting point for further research.
