This view shows the Bas Obispo cut in Panama in 1913, a stretch of the canal excavation where crews were still removing rock and earth through the continental divide. Its date places it well after the Roosevelt era that the gallery category suggests. Roosevelt, who was president until March 1909, pushed the canal project forward and became the first sitting president to travel outside the continental United States when he visited the Canal Zone in 1906. By 1913 the work was in its final years, and the canal opened to shipping in August 1914. The scene is worth studying for the scale of the digging and the rail and equipment used to haul spoil from the cut.
