The rivalry between Harvard and Princeton on the football field goes back to the nineteenth century, and this news photograph captures one of their contests. It survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, built from the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied current-event pictures to newspapers. The record gives no date, so the particular game remains unconfirmed, though the pairing and the Boston label point to a college football meeting of that era. Glass plates were the standard medium for press photographers until film replaced them in newsrooms.
