Few places in the Crimean War mattered more to the British army than Balaklava, a small harbor on the peninsula's southern coast, and this view of the railway stores on its quayside shows the port at work. Roger Fenton made the picture in 1855, when a railway was being built up from the harbor to carry supplies toward the camps besieging Sevastopol. Printed on salted paper, the photograph records the logistics behind the fighting as much as the fighting itself.
