Few details survive about the sitter of this 1855 daguerreotype, which shows a young man seated for the camera. What it does offer is a direct look at a process that was already fading from fashion by the mid-1850s. Daguerreotypes are unique positives made on a silvered copper plate, so each exposure produced one image with no negative to copy from. Sitters of this period often held very still for several seconds or longer, and the mirror-like surface means the picture only reads clearly when viewed at an angle. Its polished sheen and sharp detail reflect the careful craft that made this format popular in the 1840s and 1850s before paper-based photographs took over.
