Ionia, the seat of Ionia County on the Grand River in central Michigan, was a young town in 1868, only three years past the end of the Civil War. Its economy rested on the expanding white pine lumber trade, and sawmills and gristmills along the river depended on logs floated down from the forests upstream. Railroad building was spreading through the Grand River valley, bringing farm goods to market and new settlers to the surrounding country. Residents would have known Ionia as a trading center where farmers came to sell, county courts sat, and local newspapers debated the next election.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Ionia, Michigan, drawn in 1868. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
