A 1917 color lithograph shows Uncle Sam clasping hands with the Marquis de Lafayette, the French nobleman who fought for the American colonies in the Revolution. The poster was printed by A. Hoen & Co. and issued with Department of Labor sponsorship, and its imagery ties the newly entered United States to the older Franco-American alliance. That year, after the country declared war on Germany in April, Lafayette's name was often invoked to stress French support for the American cause. The image reflects that wartime effort to present the two nations as partners.
