Two costumed figures stand among tall trees in this watercolor, the forest rendered in loose washes that let the paper show through. Painted illustrations like this one were a staple of illustrated books from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when publishers relied on artists to bring fairy tales, adventure stories and children's classics to life on the page. Scenes set in woods were especially popular, since the forest served as a stage for transformation, danger and disguise. Watercolor suited such work because it reproduced well through the engraving and color-plate methods of the period. Looking closely, you can see how the artist used light and shadow to separate the figures from the dense background.
