Sunset, Texas, in 1890 was a small community in the cattle and farming country of north-central Texas, where ranching and cotton had long shaped local life. The 1880s brought railroads into the region, and towns like this one measured their prospects by whether a line reached them and how many merchants, wagon yards, and churches clustered near the depot and the main street. The map records those streets and buildings as residents knew them that year, when most business still moved by horse and wagon and the courthouse, stores, and schoolhouses were the center of public life. Sunset's population in 1890 was modest, and the town's later history is less documented than that of larger Texas cities, so the surviving sheet is valuable for showing how a place of its size was laid out at the end of the frontier decades.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Sunset, Texas, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
