Currier & Ives is best known for its American lithographs of city life, landscapes and rural scenes, but "Ripe Fruits" belongs to a quieter strand of the firm's output: still-life and botanical subjects produced for a public eager for colorful, affordable images. Hand coloring gave each sheet a slightly different tint, so the fruit on one copy may look warmer or cooler than on another. Lithography, which drew the image on prepared stone and printed it in quantity, made such pictures inexpensive enough to hang in ordinary parlors and kitchens.
